Meet Your Hosts and Learn the History of the House

I included the following information because I consider you not a mere
"paying guest" , but Riverside FarmHouse's future and a part of its on-going history.

Riverside FarmHouse and "Parsonage"

Riverside FarmHouse Lodging, LLC is owned and operated by my husband, Larry, and myself.   I grew up in this house--in fact I am the fourth generation here.  My great-grandfather built the house in 1896, where he and his wife raised two boys.  After his passing, my grandparents raised three children in the house, purchasing land and enlarging the farm.  One piece of property  was purchased from the Lutheran Church and my grandfather moved the parsonage from its location at the road to its present location beside the main house.  He used the parsonage for a woodworking shop until his daughter (my mother), Martha, married in 1945.  At that time, he and his wife remodeled the parsonage and moved in, living there until his passing in 1970, when the property passed to my parents.  The "parsonage" is now used for storage.

Visitors enjoy lambs
My sister and I were raised in this house and on Riverside Farm.  Life on a farm (especially in Highland County) is hard to beat!  This house and land hold many fond memories for me!.  Helping out on the farm got farming "in my blood".  Although the land is now  rented to a local cattle farmer, my husband and I run a small flock of sheep (50 breed ewes) and use the barn on the property to birth the lambs each March/April.  With the passing of my mother in 2011, I inherited the farm and house.  This house has been a home for 100 years, and now (with the opening of Riverside FarmHouse) we can share this very special place with you.

Enlarged living room
The house has received many updates since it was built.  In the 1940's, indoor plumbing, the upstairs bathroom, a hot water furnace and insulation were installed.  In the 60's, the partition between the living room and the parlor was removed making the present-day large living room.  The master bedroom was renovated and the downstairs bathroom was added along with some electrical upgrades.  In the 70's, the kitchen and dining room area was re-modeled.  In 2011, we refreshed paint, refurbished some of the floors and installed thermal-pane windows.

Jeanie & Larry Whitecotton
I am a retired Speech/Language Pathologist enjoying the flexible schedule of retirement, after reporting to work at the public schools for 30 years.  Larry retired from Dominion Resources as a storekeeper.  We are active members of the Blue Grass United Methodist Church (and invite you to worship with us during your stay at Riverside FarmHouse). In 1977, we  built our own home three miles "up the road" from the Riverside FarmHouse  but enjoy visiting the original farm.  Our two  children are married and live away from the area.  We have one grandson and one granddaughter.

Larry and I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our "FarmHouse". What a treat to be able to share "country living" and  beautiful Highland County with you!
